Mesh vs Solid Pool Covers: Which Is Better?
Both mesh and solid safety covers can meet ASTM safety standards and protect your pool through the off-season — but they behave very differently once winter actually arrives.
Mesh Safety Covers
● Allows rainwater and melting snow to drain straight through, so water never pools on top of the cover.
● Lighter weight, generally easier for one or two people to handle during installation and removal.
● Blocks sunlight well enough to significantly reduce algae growth.
● Typically the more budget-friendly option for a given pool size.
Solid Safety Covers
● Fully blocks light and debris, including fine dust and pollen that mesh can let through.
● Requires a cover pump to actively remove rain and snowmelt.
● Heavier when wet, which can make solo installation and removal more difficult.
